What it costs to charge a 2020–2024 Porsche Taycan

At the US average rate of 18¢/kWh, a full charge of a 2020–2024 Porsche Taycan costs $14.76 to $17.98 depending on version, against $18.25 for the 2025–2026 Porsche Taycan above. Per 100 miles it runs $7.38 to $9.00, against $6.66.

The first Taycans are the most energy-hungry cars on this site: a 2020 Turbo S was rated 50 kWh per 100 miles and a 2020 4S with the larger battery 49. The ratings fell in steps across the model years that followed, to 41 to 45 for 2023–2024 cars, but every version here still uses more energy per mile than its 2025–2026 successor and covers fewer miles on a charge. The 2023–2024 base car is rated 41 kWh per 100 miles with 208 miles of range, against 37 and 274 today. The table covers three versions; the Turbo, GTS and Cross Turismo models of these years sit inside the same spread.

What it costs at three real electricity rates

Your rate is the only input that really moves this number, so here is the same car at three real ones — the cheapest state, the national average, and the most expensive large mainland market.

What it costs per mile

A Porsche Taycan costs about $0.067 a mile to charge at home at the US average electricity rate, or $6.66 per 100 miles. That is energy only — the EPA rates this car at 37 kWh per 100 miles measured at the wall socket, so charging losses are already inside the figure and should not be added again.

Per mile is the number that survives a change of car: it does not care about battery size, so it is the only fair way to line this car up against one with a much bigger or smaller pack.

What it adds to your electricity bill

Charging a Porsche Taycan at home adds about $67 a month to your electricity bill at the US average rate, driving 12,000 miles a year. That is the yearly cost of $799 spread evenly across twelve months — a month with a road trip in it costs more, and a quiet one costs less.

Nothing else on the bill changes: the car draws the same kilowatt-hours whatever else is running in the house, so the increase is the charging and nothing more.

At the cheapest state rate the same driving adds $46 a month, and $123 at the most expensive — the table above has all three. If your utility offers an overnight or time-of-use rate, charging on it lands at the low end rather than the middle.

Where the numbers come from

The EPA rates this RWD, Performance Battery at 37 kWh per 100 miles with 274 miles of combined range. Those two figures together give the energy for a full charge, which is where the 101 kWh above comes from.

We work it out that way rather than quoting a battery size on purpose. Manufacturers publish gross capacity, which includes a buffer at each end of the pack that never takes a charge, so a cost built on it overstates your bill. And the EPA measures at the wall socket rather than at the battery, so charging losses are already inside the figure — no need to add them, and adding them would count the same loss twice.

What this means for this car

Even the gentlest Taycan is an expensive car to feed by the standards of this site. The base rear-wheel-drive car with the standard Performance Battery is rated 37 kWh per 100 miles, level with a Cadillac Lyriq and about half as much again as a Tesla Model 3, and the rating is identical for 2025 and 2026. For 2026 the EPA lists 17 Taycan variants, from the 4 and 4S through the GTS, Turbo and Turbo GT to the Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo wagons, spanning 36 to 44 kWh per 100 miles. The cheapest to run are the 4 and 4S with the larger Performance Battery Plus on 19-inch all-season tires, rated 36 with 315 miles of range; the thirstiest is the Turbo S Cross Turismo at 44. The bigger battery costs almost nothing per mile: a 4S with the Performance Battery Plus is rated 39 against 38 for the standard battery, but goes 295 miles instead of 252. The 2025 model year was the largest change in the car’s life. Range on comparable versions rose by a fifth to a third, and every 2020–2024 version tabled below uses more energy per mile than its successor.

How it compares

Porsche Taycan vs a typical EV and a gas car, at 18¢/kWh
Per 100 milesPer year

A mid-pack EV at 30 kWh/100mi$5.40$648
A 30 MPG gas car at $4.05/gal$13.50$1,620

All at 18¢/kWh and 12,000 miles a year. The gas comparison is illustrative — it is not a claim about any particular car.
